Coconino National Forest closing over half of their roads

April 15, 2012

By Matt Marine

The Coconino National Forest is closing more than half its forest roads this May. This will include a ban on vehicle and all-terrain use on over 3000 miles of existing roads areas as part of a 2005 U.S. Forest Service directive to limit off-road driving in the nation's forests.

4WD Adventure of the month

This is an easy 4WD (actually during the time I ran it, I did not need 4WD at all due to the recent grading) that ultimately leads to a beautiful dam and tank. The trail zigzags it's way through some very scenic canyons, then back along the tops of the ridges between them. There are some nice remote camping sites along Hog and Adobe Canyons (mostly Hog). The grasslands and views along the ridges are wonderful. Although this is a long trail, I was able to do the entire trip in about 8 hours (from Tucson). This was due to the road being recently graded and fairly smooth. I kept up a relatively fast speed (no 4WD LO required). If the road conditions change (it becomes rougher), then a day trip out to Bathtub Tank may not be feasible.

Suggested 4WD equipment

You've just bought your first Jeep and you're ready to hit the trail! Hold on there partner. Having a Jeep is a great start, but just like any sport, you need a little more equipment to do it safely. Click on the link below to go to a list of basic equipment needed for four-wheeling. By no means is this an all-inclusive list. Use your own judgment on what is needed based on your experience level, trail rating and remoteness when four-wheeling. This list is to be used only as a guide.
