Rebecca Miller

My name is Rebecca Miller, and I am a senior studying Photography at the University of Arizona. This semester I will be taking part in an internship with Experience Arizona which I am very excited about. I am positive that it will give me the opportunity to explore different areas in Arizona that I haven’t been to yet, as well as hopefully give the readers some new and interesting information that they will find useful in their adventures.

Experience Arizona Partners with Offroad Passport

July 1, 2012

By Matt Marine

I’m excited to announce a new partnership with the Offroad Passport team. Offroad Passport is an online portal for outdoor adventurers. One of its best features is its free community forum. Members are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There are tons of discussion topics where you can ask questions, find interesting nuggets, see gear reviews or share your own experiences. In addition, they offer exciting backcountry adventures from day trips to overnight expeditions.

The Offroad Passport team isn’t interested in trying to find new ways to break a driveshaft.  They are about the entire experience, from camping, hiking and photography to environmental concerns and community awareness.

I’ve set up a direct link to their website under the News/Forum navigation bar and you’ll be seeing links to specific forum threads on adventure pages and on the new Az Topics page. Check them out; you’ll be glad you did.

Upcoming Events

Pontoon Boat Tours

Two Avian Tours, one at 9:00 am and 10:15 am. These tours go to the east end of the lake. On board is a birder who will point out, identify and talk about the birds seen.

At 11:30 am the Lake Discovery Tour goes to the west end of the lake. The guide on board will point out geological formations, discuss the dam which created Patagonia Lake, and give you a brief history of the area.

On Saturdays there is a Twilight Tour just before dark. The sunsets can be spectacular from the lake. Seeing the shoreline from the water is a delightful experience. Boat tours will be held each Saturday and Sunday.

The cost for each one-hour boat trip is $5.00, payable at the beginning of the trip in the Visitor Center. Reservations are advised as the spaces go quickly. Call 520-287-2791 after October 13 for reservations. The pontoon boat holds 8 adults plus the guide and captain. If you are going on a boat trip, plan to arrive at the Visitor Center 15 minutes prior to departure to sign in, pay and be outfitted with a life jacket.

Hike of the month

The Sabino Canyon recreation area is one of the premier hiking locations in southern Arizona. And for good reason. It has awesome hikes and exquisite scenery. One thing you may not know is that there are trails other than the super popular Seven Falls trail. Rebecca Miller recently found another gem of a hike in the area: Sabino Creek. It's a shorter (and easier) hike than Seven Falls. Another thing you may not know about this hike is that it's part of a "lost" trail that was used by soldiers stationed at Fort Lowell in 1888 as a route to get to Mt. Lemmon. If you want to escape the crowds at Seven Falls or find a place to relax and put your feet in the cool water, this could be a trail for you!

Suggested hiking equipment

Here's a list of basic equipment needed for hiking. By no means is this an all-inclusive list. Use your own judgment on what is needed based on your experience level, trail rating and remoteness when hiking. This list is to be used only as a guide.
