What's New:BFG KM2 Tire Review
May 27, 2013
I replaced my KM2s with only 23k on them. They seemed to perform well in the Arizona desert, but were chunking quite badly and starting to scare me a little. Here's my review of the only tires I've ever had (except for the first 26 miles) on my Jeep.
What's New:Hackberry Cabin 4WD Adventure
May 26, 2013
I've added a new 4WD adventure to the website: Hackberry Cabin. Okay, to be honest, it's not really a cabin. I found out later that it's a pump house, but it's still awesome. If you're looking for a fairly easy 4WD trail with lots of scenery and some history thrown in, you may want to add this to your to do list.

What's New: Essence of Tranquility Hot Springs
May 6, 2013
Looking for a funky, but relaxing hot spring in southern Arizona? Try the Essence of Tranquility in Safford. We recently spent a few hours there on our way back from a week long camping trip in New Mexico. It was the first hot spring I'd ever been to and I really enjoyed it. Take a look on the QTR (Quick Trip Report) page for more information.
What's New: Coleman Instant Tent Review
May 5, 2013
I went looking for a new tent. Something easy to set up and take down since I usually camp alone. I was thrilled when I found Coleman's Instant Tent. But would it hold up in 40 mph winds and is it really that easy to set up and take down? Find out in my new review.

What's New: High Jinks Ranch
April 29, 2013
Nestled in the northern side of the Catalina Mountains along the Cody Trail Number 9 section of the Arizona Trail lies High Jinks Ranch. Once owned by the infamous Buffalo Bill Cody, the ranch is now being remodeled into a rustic bed and breakfast and martial arts dojo. Rebecca Miller and I recently received a tour of the ranch and found it to be a beautiful and magical place. If you enjoy hiking along the Arizona Trail, Arizona history or just delicious homemade apple pie, you'll want to read her story.
What's New: Skiing Snowbowl
April 8, 2013
When most people think of Arizona, an image of a dry, hot desert comes to mind. And it's true that Arizona has its fair share of that, but it also has tall, snow-clad mountains that invite skiers from hundreds of miles. The Arizona Snowbowl in Flagstaff is one of Arizona's most popular ski resorts. Rebecca Miller recently spent a weekend skiing the bowl and touring historic Flagstaff. Read about her adventure and why you may never look a pizza the same way ever again.

What's New: Battle of Picacho Peak

Many people don't know that there were battles that took place in Arizona between Union and Confederate soldiers.
One of those battles took place just below Picacho Peak in 1862.

What's New: Sabino Creek Hiking Adventure
March 7, 2013
By Matt Marine
The Sabino Canyon recreation area is one of the premier hiking locations in southern Arizona. And for good reason. It has awesome hikes and exquisite scenery. One thing you may not know is that there are trails other than the super popular Seven Falls trail. Rebecca Miller recently found another gem of a hike in the area: Sabino Creek. It's a shorter (and easier) hike than Seven Falls. Another thing you may not know about this hike is that it's part of a "lost" trail that was used by soldiers stationed at Fort Lowell in 1888 as a route to get to Mt. Lemmon. If you want to escape the crowds at Seven Falls or find a place to relax and put your feet in the cool water, this could be a trail for you!

What's New: Rock House 4WD Adventure

By Matt Marine
The Rock House Trail near Catalina is an awesome trail through some large boulder fields (you don't have to drive over them) to an old stone line shack. This one-of-a-kind cabin was extravagant with a front porch, built in BBQ and quartz chimney. It's a super fun trail that shouldn't be missed!

What's New: Merrell Geomorph Blaze Hiking Boot Review
January 29, 2013
By Matt Marine
I always hiked in my tennis shoes. Well, they weren't really tennis shoes, they were walking or cross-training shoes. Usually bought solely on price and comfort for standing of light walking. I didn't really believe there would be much difference between hiking in them and a dedicated hiking boot. I was wrong. Very wrong.

What's New: Joe Mulhattan
January 26, 2013
By Matt Marine
Did you know kangaroos can herd sheep? Or that a giant meteor struck near Flagstaff? Or that President George Washington's body had become petrified and would be on display? All these stories were published in newspapers in the late 1800s, and believed by most readers. One thing they had in common was that they were authored by Joe Mulhattan, one of the most colorful characters in Arizona history. He was known as the world's best liar. He's also the guy who stated that the gold found near Ripsey Mine was going to be the richest strike in US history. But ... maybe that was one tale that was really true?

What's New: Executive Orders and Gold Mining in Arizona
October 27, 2012

Did you know it was once illegal to own gold or mine gold in the US? This didn't happen that long ago and the reasons may surprise you, they did me. It may also be one of the reasons why there isn't a lot of remains (buildings or equipment) left at some of the mines we visit today. See my new page on how FDR's Executive Orders affected gold mining in Arizona.

What's New: Forest MVUM and Road Closure Info Pages
October 21, 2012
By Matt Marine
I've added a couple of pages regarding the Forest Service's use of Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) to document all of the upcoming National Forest road closures. It looks like more than 50% of the forest roads in Arizona may be closed (some like Coconino have already done so) in the near future. This will have a big impact on four-wheeling, ATV and motor cycle riding, hiking and mountain biking in our state. Although it appears the decisions have already been made (just yet to be carried out), it still may prove to be helpful to become involved.
The Forest Service will not be putting up signs to indicate all of these new road closures, you are required to obtain a current MVUM and know which roads are open or closed (by default it is considered closed unless specified open on the MVUM).

What's New: Oracle Control Road 4WD Adventure Added
July 28, 2012

I've added a new 4WD adventure, well it's not really a 4WD adventure, it's more like a high-clearance 2WD adventure (usually) called the Oracle Control Road. The "backside" of Mt. What's New: Slavin Mine Adventure Added
July 14, 2012
By Matt Marine
I've added an new 4WD adventure to the site: Slavin Mine.
This trail is a short shelf road leading from the end of the Cochise Peak Trail to the Slavin Mine. The road is narrow and there's not many places to turn around, but there's a great place for a picnic and view the surrounding area along the way called "Shock Rock". You can also access Slavin Gulch trail from here (and see Slavin Mine cabin). The trail is only 1 mile long (one way), so if you're already doing Cochise Peak, I'd recommend the short addition of Slavin Mine Trail.

What's New: Rice Peak Loop Adventure Added
July 9, 2012

I've added an exciting new 4WD adventure to the site: Rice Peak Loop. Sound familiar? It should. Rice Peak is an adventure that I've already listed on Experience Arizona. What is Rice Peak Loop then? Part of the trail is along the original Rice Peak trail, but instead of going to the top of Rice Peak, you loop around to just above Peppersauce Cave. This trail is easier than Rice Peak and I think it's more scenic too (though you do miss the 360 degree views at the top of Rice Peak itself).

What's New: Bug Springs Adventures
June 26, 2012
By Matt Marine
I've added an exciting new adventure to the site: Bug Springs. This trail can be done on two feet or two wheels. I chose two wheels. About half way up one of southern Arizona's best know "Sky Islands" called Mt. Lemmon, this trail can be biked for those with an adventurous soul or hiked if you're don't want to trust your fate to a couple of rubber tires. It is one of the best know downhill trails in southern Arizona. And just because it's mostly downhill, don't think it's just a ride in the park. Nope. You'll be sweating bullets climbing some of the hike-a-bike sections. But the scenery is awesome. Wonderful views and a wide variety of vegetation keep this trail interesting.

What's New: Arizona Historical Maps
June 25, 2012

I've uploaded two very cool historical maps from the 1800s on the site. The first one is from 1881 and is extremely detailed. I enjoy seeing how things have changed from back then. The second was sent to me as a "Wagon Trail Map". I believe it was from the 1860s, but not sure on this. It's interesting to see how much Arizona grew (not in size) from the 1860s to the 1880s. Huge!

What's New: Devil's Moon Published!
June 24, 2012
By Matt Marine
I'm very excited to announce that my first novel, Devil's Moon, has been published! Devil's Moon is a mystery set in Sedona, Arizona: Haunted by the recent death of his son, FBI Agent Stuart Ransom must find the truth behind a gruesome murder-suicide before his past becomes the killer’s next target. For those of you who enjoy the beauty of Sedona, I think you'll like the setting of this book (yes, there is a 4WD trip along Broken Arrow :-).
I am extremely happy that all the initial reviews are positive, such as:
"Matt Marine has written a terrific thriller. A psychopath draws a troubled FBI agent into a series of murders. The search for truth brings the agent horrifyingly close to his own worst nightmare… and it will keep readers on edge right up to the finish. Memorable characters and skillful plotting in some of Arizona's most intriguing settings."
- James C. Mitchell, Shamus Award-nominated author of the forthcoming Our Lady of the North

Josephine Canyon 4WD Adventure
This is an fairly easy 4WD spur trail off of the Bull Springs trail for those who want to do a little more exploring while you're in the area. The trail is a little more difficult than Bull Springs, but not much. The trail follows Josephine Canyon up into the Patagonia Mountains, usually cut into the hillsides above the canyon (though sometimes crossing it). There are numerous roads off in either direction. We took some of these, but not all. Rumor is that one of these will take you to the Mt. Hopkins Observatory Road, but nothing stood out for us when we went. The trail ultimately leads to the Josephine Canyon hiking trailhead.

Ridge Trail (Casa Grande Mountain Park) Hiking and Biking Adventure
The Ridge Trail in Casa Grande Mountain Park is a nice trail half way between Phoenix and Tucson. Located at the I-10 and I-8 junction at Casa Grande Mountain Park, this trail skirts the eastern foothills of the Casa Grande Mountain Range. Since my first ride here in 2010, they've done a lot of great work on the trail system. There's a nice official trailhead parking area, complete with trail maps and bathrooms. They've also put some signs up along the trails and made some nice new ones.
The Ridge Trail is one of these. It mostly follows the eastern side of the Casa Grande Mountains, about half way up. The trail is cut into the mountainside and if narrow trails with steep drop offs on one side bother you, this may not be the trail for you. Otherwise, you're in for a good ride. Unlike the lower trail, this ride is much smoother and flows better. It was beautiful in the early spring with the green grass on the mountainside and the saguaro keeping you company. If you start from the north, the ride south is mostly uphill and the ride back down is much faster (though I was a little disappointed that the trail didn't allow you to get a lot of speed on the return)

What's New: Bathtub Tank 4WD Adventure Added
April 28, 2012
By Matt Marine
This is an easy 4WD (actually during the time I ran it, I did not need 4WD at all due to the recent grading) that ultimately leads to a beautiful dam and tank. The trail zigzags it's way through some very scenic canyons, then back along the tops of the ridges between them. There are some nice remote camping sites along Hog and Adobe Canyons (mostly Hog). The grasslands and views along the ridges are wonderful. Although this is a long trail, I was able to do the entire trip in about 8 hours (from Tucson). This was due to the road being recently graded and fairly smooth. I kept up a relatively fast speed (no 4WD LO required). If the road conditions change (it becomes rougher), then a day trip out to Bathtub Tank may not be feasible.

What's New: New Charouleau Gap Video and Pictures
January 29, 2012
By Matt Marine
I've added an old video from a trip to Charouleau's Gap when we did in back in 2001. Wow, how the trail has changed (gotten easier). You can see this video at here. I've also added to new pictures to the gallery. The first is what Coronado Camp (a cabin along Charouleau's Gap trail) looked like in the late 1980s and what it looks like now (from a trip in late 2011). It's a real shame.

What's New: Total Wreck 4WD Adventure Added
January 13, 2012
By Matt Marine
Total Wreck is a super fun, but easy 4WD trail. lt starts by Empire Ranch near Sonoita and the first section takes you through the vast range grasslands of the area. This is a very beautiful section of Arizona. The trail follows a gasline road and there are tons of short (50-100 ft) climbs and descents. Some of these are very steep and can be a little scary for newbies. These are a blast. Many of these also have bypasses that are less steep.

Oracle Ridge is a really easy 4WD trail that may be interesting for anyone just learning the sport. The trail doesn't have any obstacles and the only reason it is 4WD is a few of the hills are a little steep for 2WD. This is also a neat place to explore. There are tons of other trails in the area and you can visit the Campo Bonito mess hall.
